The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are premised on the principles of ‘leaving no one behind’ and transformative development. Achieving the goals requires active citizens that are engaged in community development and claiming their rights. The chapter explores the ways in which a local NGO uses Saemaul Undong (SMU), a Korean community development model, to localise holistic achievement of a number of SDGs. This dissertation and the four separate articles contained therein examine Finnish pastors as builders of the Swedish state from the 1550s to the 1610s. The subject is studied from three perspectives. First, the relationship between the crown and the church (and the pastors) is explored. Second, the study investigates the relationship between the pastors and local communities. The third aspect connects the first two as it sheds light on the pastors’ role as intermediators between local communities and the crown. The opportunity for habitat shift in sympatry is thought to be an important factor in sympatric speciation by facilitating assortative mating and offering opportunities for divergent selection. Oenanthe conioides (Apiaceae) is a narrow endemic from the lower Elbe river area (Germany) where it is restricted to areas experiencing fresh water tides inundating the plants twice a day. Parasites often affect the abundance and life-history traits of their hosts. We studied the impact of a social parasite - a slavemaking ant - on host ant communities using two complementary field manipulations. In the first experiment, we analysed the effect of social parasite presence on host populations in one habitat. In a second experiment, conducted in two habitats, we used a cross-fostering design, analysing the effect of sympatric and allopatric social parasites. Moving hybrid zones are receiving increasing attention. However, so far little is known about the proximate mechanisms underlying these movements. Signalling behaviour, by individuals engaged in interspecific sexual and aggressive interactions, may play a crucial role. In this study, we investigated song variation within a moving hybrid zone between two warblers, Hippolais polyglotta and H. icterina. In either event, hybridization between animals with differently coadapted gene or chromosomal complexes can result in a decrease in fertility, viability, etc. in the initial hybrids and especially in later generations.
